30, a collection of poems by Jaachi Anyatonwu banner

If by the end of the year you realize that you achieved just a few

and gazing about, everyone made it but you

be happy, at least you have life
If you realize that the much energy exerted
from the dawn of January compared
to the little gain in the dusk of December,
fall a little below average,
be happy, at least you have life
If of a sudden, you realize that time is ticking so fast
while the year hastens to its end
and there’s nothing you can change,
be happy, at least you have life
If after a sumptuous dream of happy endings,
your tummy still rumbles in emptiness
and your soul grumbles in barrenness,
be happy, at least you have life
Before you curl into a rumpled ball
and throw up that pity party,
just remember, you must become a meaningful specific
rather than a wandering generality
