POEM 166: FATHER, SON.

When a father gives to his son, both laugh.
When a son gives to his father, both cry.
So says some ancient writer,
and I don’t know why.

Could be tears of joy
because father is joyous, his son
is become the blessing he dreamt of.

Could be tears of joy
because son is grateful
daddy never gave up
on him, though flawed and a fool.
