The Two Gates & Loyalty

As the sun painted the sky with its golden hues, a man found himself strolling along a road, accompanied by his beloved dog—a loyal companion who had departed this earthly realm years ago. Astonished, he realized that he, too, must have departed from the realm of the living. Curiosity sparked within him, and he continued his journey, gently resting his hand on the head of his faithful canine.

Not too far down the road, his gaze fell upon a magnificent pearl gate, its brilliance reflecting the sun’s rays. Standing beside it was a captivating figure. Eager to discover more, he approached the gate and inquired about its destination. The man’s response resonated with divine tranquility, “Heaven.”

Feeling the warmth of the day, the traveler politely requested entry to quench his thirst and that of his faithful companion. However, his heart sank when he learned that dogs were not permitted in this heavenly abode. Yet, undeterred, the man mustered a smile, gently caressed his loyal friend, and turned away from the gate, continuing along the path.

After some time, he arrived at a modest gate, worn and in dire need of repair. Standing beside it was a humble farmer, his appearance somewhat disheveled. Once again, our traveler sought answers, asking about the gate’s destination. To his surprise, the response echoed once more, “Heaven.”

Embarking on a similar quest for refreshment, the man requested a drink for himself and his loyal companion. To his delight, the farmer readily offered him a cup and a bowl. As he filled the bowl and quenched his own thirst from the fountain within, an intriguing thought occurred to him. He questioned the farmer, sharing the previous gatekeeper’s claim of leading to Heaven.

With a gentle smile, the farmer replied, “Indeed, but that gate leads to Hell.” Perplexed, the man inquired if this revelation bothered the farmer. “No,” the farmer responded, patting the dog affectionately, “It serves a purpose—to help us discern those who would abandon their dearest friends.”
