30, a collection of poems by Jaachi Anyatonwu banner

when you discarded all clothing
& baked in sunlight
we wore sweatshirts over silk
& endured a sweat bath

when you sipped chilled sweetness
& munched crispy fries
we nursed scalled tongues
& chewed sour chords

when you danced in the rain
& prayed the drops don’t cease
we huddled beside the fireplace
& shivered, coughed, sneezed

this sweatshirt
this bland meal
this sour life
we didn’t choose it

but, if we must live longer
than the fear that enslave us
we can’t but love these chains, deliberately
