November Joy 15: Stop Harboring Bitterness

"I've learned ….That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.” - Andy Rooney

I hope this musing finds you well and happy. I want to share with you a quote that I came across recently and that resonated deeply with me. It is by Andy Rooney, an American journalist and writer, who said:

“I’ve learned ….That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.” – Andy Rooney

Andy is saying that holding on to negative emotions such as anger, resentment, or hatred can only harm you and prevent you from experiencing joy and peace.

Bitterness is like a poison that seeps into your heart and mind and blocks the flow of love and gratitude.

Happiness, on the other hand, is like a boat that sails on the sea of life, looking for a safe and welcoming harbour.

If you fill your harbour with bitterness, happiness will not be able to dock there and will sail away to another place.

How can one avoid harbouring bitterness and make room for happiness?

I think the first step is to acknowledge and accept your feelings without judging or suppressing them. You are human beings, and you have the right to feel whatever you feel. However, you also have the power to choose how you react to your feelings and whether you let them control you or not.

The second step is to forgive and let go. Forgiveness is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and courage. It does not mean that we condone or forget what happened, but that you release yourself and others from the burden of the past. Forgiveness is a gift that you give to yourself and that allows you to heal and move on.

The third step is to practise gratitude and kindness. Gratitude is the attitude that helps you appreciate what you have instead of focusing on what you lack. Kindness is the action that helps you spread love and compassion instead of hatred and violence. Gratitude and kindness are the keys that open the door to happiness, and we invite it to stay in our harbour.

I hope this quote and these thoughts inspire you to reflect on your own life, and to make positive changes if needed.

Remember, you are the captain of your own ship, and you can decide where you want to sail and where you want to dock. Choose happiness, and happiness will choose you.
